What is it with some Yorkie Dog's Ears and Tail?

Question by pinkgem: What is it with some Yorkie Dog’s Ears and Tail?

I bought my first Yorkie puppy dog. I have a couple questions about their ears and tail. Why do some Yorkies have ears that stand up and some don’t? Do their ears get clipped or something before they are adopted out? Are their tails clipped down to a stub before they are adopted out? My Yorkie’s ears don’t stand up and her tail is just a little stub.

Best answer:

Answer by debbielynnew27
take your little doggie to the groomer, they will shave the top part of the ear to help it stand up. its so cute, they call it “tipping the ear”. and most yorkies do have a docked tail. look at the AKC standards for the breads.

Answer by Helena
sigh……..the BREED STANDARD calls for PRICK ears & a DOCKED tail!
Those specimens who don’t meet those standards are just pet-stuff.NEVER to be bred!
Tails are docked at 3 days.Ears that are slow to stand are TAPED!
If you got a pos from a puppymiller,it will NOT fit the standard!!
WHY weren’t/aren’t the ears TAPED???

Answer by susan c
I did’nt do anything to my Yorkie’s ears, they stood up on their own at 9 months.

Answer by ♥willow♥
How old is your pup? Yorkie puppy ears are usually floppy. My yorkie’s ears stood up and stayed up at about 14 weeks. It’s also usually a sign of a purebred yorkie. Many yorkie mixes will always have the floppy ears. Yorkies do not need to have their ears clipped (although, in my opinion, no dogs need that).

And tails are docked when they are just a few days old. It’s not safe if it’s done much later than that.

To help the ears, you can get a groomer to shave most of the hair off of the top of the ears to lighten them a little bit. And then you can try to tape his ears up. There are lots of pictures to instruct how to tape the ears. But my yorkie wouldn’t let me. The moment the tape and paper pieces were on, he would roll his head on the ground until the tape came off.

The concept of euthanasia may not be pleasent but it is an unfortunate part of any animal shelter. "At Metro Animal Control, we are a temporary facility, based upon irresponsible pets ownership," said Casper Police Chief Tom Pagel, who oversees the shelter.

is it legal to sell a dog or charge a rehoming fee on a dog on craigslist?

Question by godlovesugly: is it legal to sell a dog or charge a rehoming fee on a dog on craigslist?

i currently posted a add for my dog on craigslist but i dont have any experience with this
so if you can help me out on the legality’s of selling or rehoming a dog on craigslist thatd be awesome
thanks
what is a good price for a dog or price for a rehoming fee

Best answer:

Answer by Cookie
You are not allowed to sell a dog on Craigslist. You can ask for an adoption fee. The rehoming fee should be the cost of the spay/neuter surgery the dog should have. If the dog is already spayed/neutered, a small fee to assure you that someone is willing to pay for the dog. Do all of the proper screening. Ask for references. It’s not enough to just ask for them, actually CALL them. Your best option in finding your dog a good home would be to go through a no-kill rescue organization.

Answer by ČĤĨĞĨŔĹ
Yes, you can charge a small re-homing fee of $ 100 or less. But you cannot sell puppies on Craigslist.

If you read their rules & regulations, you will see what you can & can’t do.

Answer by Britney
you cant legally sell a dog, but a re-homing fee is ok. what ever you want to sell the dog for thats what the re-homing fee is.

just make sure he goes to a good home ask them questions and make sure they are responsible people.
a lot of dogs that were free to a good home or with a low re-homing fee, are used for fighting or bait training for fighting.

best of luck

Answer by Meg
You CANNOT sell a dog on craigslist.

You can rehome them and charge a fee to ensure a good home but it cant be an excessive fee or itll be lumped in with the rest of the scum and backyard breeders selling their pets on craigslist and will be flagged. With enough flags the post will be deleted.

Answer by BYB’s ♥ small IQs
“Legally” is completely different than what the rules of the site allow.

Yes, you can “legally” post a dog for sale on CL, but, you’ll be violating the terms of the site.

A small rehoming fee is allowed, but anything over what the local shelter charges is usually flagged and removed.

I think that $ 50-$ 100 is fair, and that $ should go *directly* to your local shelter as a donation. And the dog needs to be fixed and have a ‘take back’ clause meaning that if they can’t keep the dog, it MUST be returned to you.

Answer by BBQ’d Pomchi.. YUM YUM!
you can NOT “sell” dogs

You can charge a “small rehoming fee”.. if the dog is current on all vet care, about $ 50 or so.

In the Hospital

In the Hospital
dog ear infection

A few days ago Bowie started behaving very strangely. He became slow, and stumbled around, often losing his balance. He stared at walls, walked aimlessly, often in circles, and sometimes even bumped into things as if he couldn’t see well.

I had given Bowie a bath a week earlier, and I thought that perhaps he developed an ear infection from water getting into his ears. An ear infection was a very plausable explanation for his balance problem. All it would require is some antibiotics.

On Sunday night I took him to a 24 hour Emergency vet hospital, where they performed a series of blood and neurological tests. They quickly ruled out an ear infection and were convinced that something was not right with his brain.

Monday evening I went to another Vet, and then Tuesday morning went to see a neurologist who was also convinced that this was a neurological problem. Blood tests ruled out various viruses, fungi and organ failures.

Based on a variety of tests and statistics, the neurologist was confident that Bowie had meningitis, and not a tumor. Bowie exhibited symptoms that pointed to several areas of the brain. If it was a tumor it likely would have initially manifested in one part of the brain.

If it was meningitis, it could be viral, bacterial, or fungal, or due to his own body’s immune system attacking itself.

The best way to determine what was wrong was to do an MRI scan of his brain, which Bowie had this afternoon.

Tonight I got the news that it was meningitis, and that it was caused by the immune system attacking his brain.

The only treatment is a type of chemotherapy every 3-4 weeks to dampen the immune system. As bad as this sounds, the drug is injected with a tiny needle and the treatment itself is not painful. I was afraid from prior experience with chemo that Bowie would be suffering during these treatments.

Bowie had his first chemo treatment tonight, and is staying in the hospital overnight. I just spoke to his nurse, and he is resting comfortably.

We hope that the treatment works, and that it will help him live a happy, normal life.

My dog has an illness or is depressed from his brothers death?

Question by Ally: My dog has an illness or is depressed from his brothers death?

My dog had a twin brother who recently passed away from an illness, he has become skinny, his back is no longer straight but hunched, doesnt want to eat and not respond. We looked around the area and we found to what we believe was blood near him. We dont know what is going on. please help. We figure he’s sick but depressed over his brother’s death…please…help.

Best answer:

Answer by Kat A
take him to the vet, he could be sick

Answer by Lori M
I think it would be impossible to find an answer here. They only way to determine what is going on with your dog is to bring him to the vet, especially if hes in the shape you describe and you found blood. What was your other dogs illness?

Your dog really needs to be checked out.

Answer by Animal Lover
PLEASE take him to the vet. He could die. Dogs do get upset after a death of a close one, but they don’t get sick. The fact that you say y’all found blood means that he could have something seriously wrong. I am BEGGING you, take him to the vet.

Answer by Bonzie12
Dogs mourn. When one dog dies, owners will often notice some changes in the pets that are left behind. They may become aloof or lethargic. Some may stop eating or become clingy. Based on these outward signs, it appears that dogs do grieve when their canine companion dies.

Because our pets cannot speak, we don’t really know what is going through their minds or what they are thinking. We must base our interpretations of their emotional state on their behavior – what they do in certain situations and under specific circumstances.

When a person experiences the death of a human loved one, we may know he feels grief based on what he says. Very often, however, it is how he reacts or what he does that tells us he is suffering. He loses his focus, becomes listless and disoriented, doesn’t eat and becomes disinterested in what is happening around him. The person may cry or go without sleep or sleep more than usual.

An animal that is experiencing the loss of another animal companion may react similarly. “Some animals can actually become depressed when they lose a loved one,” says Monique D. Chretien, MSc, AHT, Animal Behavior Consultant. “They show symptoms similar to humans such as loss of interest in their favorite activities and sleeping more than usual. However, sometimes dogs may distance themselves from the family and sleep more than usual when they are ill, so you should consult with your veterinarian before seeing a behaviorist if your dog exhibits symptoms such as these.”

Your dog may lose her appetite, become disoriented, or become more clingy. If the deceased dog was taken to a veterinarian to be euthanized, the grieving dog may sit at the window for days watching for her return. Animal behaviorists commonly call this emotional state separation anxiety. On the surface, the pet’s behavior is similar to
that of a person experiencing grief over the loss of a loved one.

Answer by Vashti
Take your dog to the vet to rule out any illness.

Grief could be the problem. When we had our standard schnauzer put down several years ago, my beagle (who was his bestest buddy) mourned him for 5 or 6 months. Eventually, she got over it, but it was sad.

Answer by ringtonelol
Dogs do have emotions and it is not rare for them to become depressed if a friend is lost. I think a good idea is to get another dog. Not for you for your dog. Not to fill the gap… but to fill a hole in your pup’s heart. I think that he just needs a new friend. And remember, time heals all wounds. Please, be prepared. This dog may pass on really soon. I’m so dreadfully sorry.

What is your opinion on dog clothes?

Question by <3 Chiweenie: What is your opinion on dog clothes?

Just wanted to get opinions on people who buy clothes just to make their dog look cute. I read so many posts on here with everyone bashing “designer dogs” and people just getting dogs to be fashion Accessories, just wondering where everyone stood on the issue of dressing their dog.
I dress mine too, not everyday, but if its cold outside they have sweaters and if its raining they have rain coats.

Best answer:

Answer by Futbolista07
only for girls if your a guy your probably gay who does that

Answer by hellonataliecampbell
i think its okay, if its like winter and the dog is cold then clothes are great. but if its just to make dogs look cute then its kind of stupid.

hate clothes on chiwawas.

Answer by pbr_chick
I have my dog wear sweaters in the winter. Sometimes, especially right after I’ve given her a bath, I’ll have her wear a t-shirt in the summer, just to keep her clean (she’s all white). Dog clothes have their practical purposes, and it doesn’t hurt that they can look cute at the same time!

Answer by Jani F
No I think as long as you love your dog and dress it according to the weather its perfectly fine. Dont put on a thick jersey for your dog if its hot outside…preferably dont dress your dog at all when its hot outside. Remember their bodies are very small so they regulate temperature very quickly.

As long as your dog stays your best friend and not turn into an accessories like the Hollywood star’s dogs…I wonder what happens to those doggies once they get home and out of the cameras?

Answer by Shannon B
I can see if you have a hairless dog or something weird like that, maybe booties for tiny dogs when it’s cold but no…dogs do not need clothes. People humanize dogs way to much! My dog will be mad if I ignore him, my dog will be sad if I correct him…… it’s the same as putting a dress on your dog. It’s not a baby, it might be your baby but it’s not a baby, it’s a DOG! I understand it looks cute but really…send your money to your local animal shelter, your dog doesn’t need nor desire clothing!

Answer by Leah
My dog has a winter jacket and a water-proof, she looks cute but we only bought it because she didn’t like the rain and wind and refused to go for walks!

She doesn’t mind now because she doesn’t get cold or wet :o )

Answer by ξ Bindi § dogs love Sea Kittens
I’m not a big fan of dressing up dogs.

I will on occasion put something on the dogs, a shirt, hat or bandanna if we’re visiting a group of people. The dogs like the extra attention, and it puts smiles on peoples faces.

I will also put a hat on Max my large black lab when we go for walks. He’s a people lover and without his hat people will literally cross the street when they see him. Apparently big black dogs are scary unless they are wearing hats.

I do think some people take it over board, and I would never put anything on my dogs that restricted movement, or have them wear things in the presence of other dogs. Clothing on dogs can mask body language, and lead to unnecessary arguments between dogs because one can’t “read” the other.

Answer by crazy
If people want to dress their dogs let them be as long as the dogs are not being physically harmed. It’s no ones business what others do with THEIR dogs, the owners are the ones that pay their dogs vet bills, buy their food, give them love, clean up their crap.

I put sweatshirts on mine in the winter.

Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low (October 31, 1860 – January 17, 1927) was an American youth leader and the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912.

She was born Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon in Savannah, Georgia, and was known as "Daisy" for most of her life because when her uncle saw her as a baby girl, he said, "I’ll bet she’ll be a daisy!." Her mother’s family came from Chicago and her father was a Confederate Captain in the American Civil War. Daisy was also called "grasshopper", because she would always be jumping into new games, hobbies and ideas. Another one of her nicknames was "Little Ship." Her grandparents in the North called her that because she would always beg to hear the story about her great-grandmother, who was captured by Indians. Even though she was a captive, she was always joyful, so the Indians started calling her "Little-Ship-Under-Full-Sail."

Juliette was educated in several prominent boarding schools, including the Virginia Female Institute (now Stuart Hall School) and Mesdemoiselles Charbonniers (a French finishing school in New York City).

When she was about 25 years old, Juliette suffered an ear infection which was treated with silver nitrate. This treatment damaged her ear, causing her to lose a great deal of her hearing in that ear.

At the age of 26, even though her parents had apprehensions, she married William Mackay "Willy" Low, the son of a wealthy cotton merchant in Savannah and England. His mother was a native of Savannah, Georgia. Their wedding took place on December 21, 1886, which happened to be her parents’ 29th wedding anniversary. A grain of rice thrown at the wedding became lodged in Juliette’s good ear. When it was removed, her ear drum was punctured and became infected, causing her to become completely deaf in that ear. Her hearing was severely limited for the rest of her life.

Her marriage to Mr. Low proved to be childless and unhappy. Although the couple moved to England, Juliette continued her travels and divided her time between the British Isles and America. During the Spanish-American War, Juliette came back to America to aid in the war effort. She helped her mother organize a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers returning from Cuba. Her father was commissioned as a general in the U.S. Army and served on the Puerto Rican Peace Commission.

As early as 1901, due to her husband’s infidelities, Juliette intended to get a divorce. However, her husband died before the divorce proceedings could be finalized. When his will was read Juliette discovered that her husband had left his money to his mistress. She was left with a small widow’s pension. It was in 1911 that Juliette met Second Boer War hero (and founder of the Scouting movement) Robert Baden-Powell and his sister Agnes. She and Sir (later Lord) Baden Powell shared a passion for sculpture and art. She also enjoyed working with iron.

While in the UK, Juliette worked as a Girl Guide leader for troops she organized in Scotland and London. Juliette decided to found something similar for the girls of America. On March 12, 1912, Juliette gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. Margaret "Daisy Doots" Gordon, her niece and namesake, was the first registered member, but did not attend the first meeting. The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year. The organization was incorporated in 1915, with Juliette serving as president until 1920 when she was granted the title of founder.

In personality, Daisy was known for being eccentric and charming. One commonly related anecdote recounts how, at an early Scout board meeting, she stood on her head to display the new Girl Scout shoes that she happened to be wearing. She also wrote poems; sketched, wrote and acted in plays; and became a skilled painter and sculptor. She had many pets throughout her life and was particularly fond of exotic birds, Georgia mockingbirds, and dogs. Daisy was also known for her great sense of humor.

Juliette Gordon Low contracted breast cancer in 1923, but kept it a secret and continued diligently working for the Girl Scouts. Low died January 17, 1927, from this cancer, and was buried in her Girl Scout uniform in Savannah, Georgia.

In Savannah, Georgia tourists and locals can visit three historic sites which relate to the life of Juliette Gordon Low. The home of her birth, The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is one of the most visited house museums in Georgia. The Andrew Low House became her Savannah home after her marriage to William Mackay Low in 1886, and The Girl Scout First Headquarters is the former carriage house of the Andrew Low family. Juliette converted the carriage house into her Girl Scout headquarters shortly after the first meeting in 1912 and willed it to the local Savannah Girl Scouts upon her death in 1927.

During World War II, a Liberty ship was named after her, the SS Juliette Low, hull number 2446. This ship was launched on May 12, 1944, and scrapped in 1972.
On July 3, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill authorizing a stamp in honor of Juliette Gordon Low. The stamp was one of few dedicated to women.

In 1953, Girl Scouts of the USA purchased and restored Juliette Low’s childhood home in Savannah. It became known as the Juliette Gordon Low Girl Scout National Center, and is often referred to in Scouting as the Birthplace. In 1965, the house was designated a registered National Historic Landmark.

In 1954, the city of Savannah, Georgia, honored her by naming a school after her. A Juliette Low School also exists in Anaheim, California.

On October 28, 1979, Juliette Low was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.

On December 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill naming a new federal building in Savannah in honor of Juliette Low. It was the second federal building in history to be named after a woman.

In 1992, a Georgia non-profit group honored Juliette Low as one of the first Georgia Women of Achievement. A bust of Juliette Low is displayed in the State Capitol.
In 2000, The Deaf World in Wax, a traveling exhibit, featured Juliette Low as a famous deaf American.

In 2005, Juliette Low was honored as part of a new national monument in Washington, D.C.named The Extra Mile Points of Light Volunteer Pathway. The monument’s medallions, laid into sidewalks adjacent to the White House, form a one-mile walking path.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus – British TV Icon

During the late 1960′s and early 70′s one of my favourite tv shows was Monty Python’s Flying Circus. This comedy show was a ground breaking show which was based on surreal and silly concepts which we English just loved. The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show with a surreal approach (aided by Gilliam animation).

I think the Premier League should just introduce Goal Line technology and ignore FIFA.

The show mixed surreal madness with genius comedy to create one of the funniest shows on British TV. A DVD celebrating their anniverary is out for all to buy and view.

Looking to adopt or rescue a small to medium sized dog in OH?

Question by Jasmine: Looking to adopt or rescue a small to medium sized dog in OH?

In the areas of : Toledo, Cleveland, or Columbus

It doesn’t really matter the breed. But my budget is 50-150 (for adoption or rescue)

I’m buying a dog for my sister as a birthday present (she is 6). I don’t have a lot of money to spend on the actual dog, but I do have a plan for care/health costs for the dog. So no lectures are needed.

I’d rather rescue a dog, then shell out a huge amount of cash to a breeder.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Considering it’s just my sister and I, I’m going to have to say yes. Everyone is on board.

If you know what breed you’re looking for then do a google search including the word rescue before it. There are usually specific rescues for each breed. :) It takes a bit of time to look through the sites and find your perfect pooch but I’m sure you will!

Just make sure you mention it’s for a child….as some dogs can’t be rehomed with children. :D Good luck!! It’s such a fun process..

Answer by Bozema

As with humans, dogs need dog life jackets when they are in and around water. If you have a pool or are frequently at a beach then you need to own one or more dog life jackets. Life jackets for dogs come in many different styles and sizes so you are sure to find a dog life vest or jacket that is perfect for your pet. You can be assured that your dog will be safe when wearing a life jacket when in or by the water.

Small dogs such as Pekingese, toy poodles, Bichon and Silky terriers will use an XS life jacket. XS is normally reserved for dogs that weigh between 7 to 15 pounds. Even smaller dogs like Chihuahuas, Yorkshires, and Pomeranians would use XXS life jackets. Dogs that tend to be between 15 and 20 pounds such as Welsh Terriers, Dachshunds and Russell terriers all fit into a S life jacket. Basically the bigger the dog the bigger the life jacket.

Most dog life jackets will have a quick grab handle on the top so you can reach out and quickly catch your dog if it is in trouble. It I advised to not use a neoprene life jacket as many dogs tend to become overheated and it can case a rash by chafing. The current life jackets for dogs are breathable and the material allows for fast drying and draining.

Many people believe that all dogs can swim, hence the doggy paddle, but actually some dogs can’t swim and don’t like being in water. Certain dogs, such as greyhounds, tend to be low in body fat will quickly become cold in water. Additionally certain dogs may have had a traumatic experience revolving around water, such as falling in as a puppy and they will actually have a water phobia. Even if your dog loves the water and it is a strong swimmer it is possible for them to become fatigued or be overcome by the tide and waves. Wearing a dog life vest can save your dogs life.

Even if your dog loves the water being overweight, old or sick can fatigue them and they can succumb. Believe it or not, even dogs can reach a point where they have difficulty keeping their head above water. A life jacket can help your dog float if it should reach that point. You should think about it this way if you require your kids to wear a life jacket or flotation device then so should your dog. They are part of the family too.

When introducing your dog to the water you want to do it slowly so that the dog remains calm and is not anxious. Having the dog feel secure and safe will let it enjoy the water once it has acclimated. This is the same for wearing a life jacket, let them wear the jacket a bit and become comfortable in it before putting them in the water with the life jacket on.

The material used to make the life jacket should be durable and made of breathable, buoyant material. Some life jackets for dogs will even have a buoyancy rating. When your dog is in the water make sure you can always see them as a dog can become entangled in the life jacket. If you take the time to properly introduce your dog to the water using the correct safety equipment they will have just as much fun as you will.

You can purchase a dog life vest in almost any color and they also come in some fun prints. Others have reflective strips that are great for spotting your dog in the bright sun. Most dog life jackets are designed based on the measurement from the base of the dogs neck to the base of the tail.
