Question by Cathy: How can I better train my 2 shitzu dogs?
I have 2 shitzu dogs and I leave them in a pen in my (heated) garage during the day. They pee and poop in the pen and also eat the poop. I leave them in crates during the night and they are fine. I hate to leave them in crates during the day while I’m at work and gone for 8 or 9 hours. Any suggestions?

ok my dog is left in a crat during the day and he is FINE!! when im at home during the day he just sleeps anyway.. exactly what he does in his crate. dont think you’re being mean to your dog by leaving them in their crate because you’re actually protecting them and teaching them. just be sure to let them out to do their thing at least after 9 hrs or so
by the way it’s shih tzu you should know how to spell ur dogs breed

If your dogs are eating their poop they should be looked at by your vet they aremissing something in their diet. As far as leaving them in crates while your at work they get left that long at night. Just give them time to play before you put them in their crates.

Hi well the length of time that they are left is not really desirable & it would be better if you could get someone to let them out for you during the day as this way you have things right now is going to be extremely difficult to house break the dogs…
All these things should be taken into cinsideration before you actually go out & get a dog as it is far from an ideal way of keeping your dogs…they lack company & you don’t seem to have enough time to spend with them…Regards Jake

Dog proof a bathroom. They can stay in there with more room and some toys.
Get a larger pen for the garage.

Unsanitary conditions can lead unhealthy living conditions and lead them to eat feces. With that said, coprophagia often occurs in dogs. A clean environment, social enrichment and activity, an additive can be added to the dog food to make their feces taste bad. Ask your vet.

How about hiring a petsitter to come by and let the dogs out and clean up and give them some activity and mental stimulation.
Dog walker?
Leaving them in crates for long hours can be seen as abuse and cruelty. You might want to re-think why you want to be a pet owner. The Humane Society of the United States and the American SPCA offer some good information on pet ownership and what is required to have a great companionship. Dogs should be a joy to own and add to your life.
