Do shitzu dogs make good pets?

Question by Music: Do shitzu dogs make good pets?

Are they high maintenance? Are they yappy? Are they loyal to their owner? Do they get along well with other animals?

Thank You

The only stuff really high maintenance is the grooming (needs daily brushings and going to the groomer every 6 to 8 weeks) and house training, they can be a little stubborn with that at times. Just gotta be consistent with training and they will get the hint. I wouldn’t trade my little man for anything in the world though. I got him at 8 weeks, he was socialized through puppy training classes and he was raised around kids, dogs and cats. He’s great with them. He just loves everyone. He’s never really been a big yapper, that all depends on the individual dog. He’s a lover, very loyal. He attached himself to me very quickly, it took no time at all, he’s a total mama’s boy. I don’t know what I’d do without him.

We have two shih tzu dogs. Both are crosses (one terrier, the other bichon). The shih tzu/terrier is extremely quiet and well behaved, plays well with other dogs, totally loyal, good listener, etc. The shih tzu/bichon is a bit more yappy, defintely more energetic but still great with other dogs and loyal. He doesn’t listen as well but we’re working on that (he’s still quite young!).

We love having them around and they provide a lot of entertainment for us! They are also really good with kids. I can’t imagine life without them anymore…

Let’s see…
I have a few friends that have Shih Tzus… and I also GROOM a lot of Shih Tzus….
Good pets???
Heck YES
High maintenance???
YES – when it comes to grooming….need to be done about every 8 weeks
Yappy???
Can be if not trained
Loyal???
YES – but friendly to ALL PEOPLE if properly socialized
Other animals???
YES – if properly socialized.

The HUGE problem is that many people who get Shih Tzus spoil them from puppyhood. THey don’t take obedience classes, they don’t socialize their dogs with people and other dogs, they don’t take them to the groomer soone enough for their first clip (as soon as they have had their 2nd set of shots…just to get used to it)…they don’t brush/comb the dog and they carry it everywhere so the dog does not know what legs are for.
If that souns cynical…sorry…but in MANY MANY cases it is true…
I am a professional groomer…i HAVE BEEN BITTEN BY MORE SHIHTZUS THAN ANY OTHER BREED….granted, the bites were not serious BUT they were all spoiled and not used to being told what to do…
Among the ShihTzus I know…1 completes in Agility, 1 competes in Obedience, 1 is a certified Therapy Dog that visits people in hospitals. THey are actually very intelligent dogs…BUT NO ONE TREATS THEM THAT WAY….
WONDEFUL WONDERFUL pets if properly trained, socialized and groomed.
Good luck

They need to be groomed a lot, if thats what you mean by askeing if they are high maintenance.
They might be a bit yappy, it depends on the personality, if they are yappy the owner or dog trainer can fix that!
They are loyal, I think just about every dog is if you respect them.
They can get along with other animals, if interduced at an early age.

i have a shih tzu and she’s adorable – she doesn’t really yap, but she’s older. we had a shih tzu puppy that wouldn’t stay quiet, so i guess it just depends. they require brushing and walking just like every other breed of dog, however you should brush them more often. my dog gets along with other animals, but that also depend on what you teach them while they’re puppies.

my dog is a spoiled brat, she probably has more clothes than me ;)
