Where is a good website to buy dogs ands puppys?

Question by Jimbob: Where is a good website to buy dogs ands puppys?

(Apart from www.Petfinder.com) I need a good website to buy a siberian husky, but i cant see any good websites where they selling dogs.

Best answer:

Answer by BMTHESPIAN
None of them. Responsible breeders do not sell dogs or puppies online

Answer by More Bored Collie
That’s because there are no good websites to buy (good) dogs from.

Answer by ♥BiGbEnMyHoRse♥
Preloved.co.uk is great. Heres the link to the dogs section -

http://www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-adverts.listadverts/sec-Home+and+Family/cat-Pets+and+Livestock/subcat-Dogs/fd71d669.html

Just punch in your area and what type of dog you want and see what you get :)
Hope this helps xD

Answer by Sarah
Beware of websites that sell puppies. Most are scams that will take your money and run. The rest are backyard breeders that couldn’t care less about their dogs’ health or where the puppies end up. They should never EVER be supported by buying a puppy. It will only perpetuate the cycle and make them breed their dogs more.

The best place to go would be the Siberian Husky Kennel Club in America (or whatever country you’re in) and find a reputable breeder there. You can also find a breed specific rescue for huskies in your area and adopt one (even a purebred) that needs a home.

Answer by Mik
do NOT get a random dog from the internet because there’s a good chance it came from a byb or PUPPY MILL!

only get dogs from the pound or a certified, AKC registered breeder. check your local pound, there’s bound to be huskies or husky mixes there waiting for homes.

EDIT: bolo/aj, i just want to point out females don’t have testicles….

Answer by BOLO / A.J
contact one of the questioner’s she said that her siberian female has become aggressive since she has had her testicles removed she may give it to you

Answer by PeterbiltDave
I used nextdaypets.com & found a great puppy. I had to fly her into Tucson from Houston. The breeder made the arrangements & all went fine. She came to me already leash trained & crate adjusted. My pup is now 14mos old & I’m very happy with her. People on this website will tell you “don’t buy online, or reputable breeders don’t sell online blah blah blah”. I am proof that is not true. I believe there may be scams or poorly bred pups online so one needs to be careful. But do sum investigating on your prospective breeder & go for it if you feel good about it. Enjoy your new pup.

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are breed at Puppy Mills, and then sold to Pet Stores. These dogs only job is to breed and have puppies, so the owner can make as much of a profit as possible. If the dogs can no longer breed, then they are very often killed with a metal object beaten against their head. No health care, never enough food, and no medical care, these dogs live in a wire crate their whole life with no socialization, and never able to enjoy the grass and walking. This is no way to live. To stop Puppies Mills, don’t buy puppies at Pet Stores.

Do people that buy dogs from pet stores or icky back yard breeders still consider themselves pet lovers?

Question by My BFF is a Pitador!: Do people that buy dogs from pet stores or icky back yard breeders still consider themselves pet lovers?

Especially people that buy from pet stores and direct from the mills – can they be pet lovers when they are supporting people who torture animals for profit? I mean, they can’t really be actual pet lovers when they are allowing dogs to live in agony in horrendous conditions just so they can have a puppy? Wouldn’t a real pet lover want to save lives?
when you breed and buy, you let a shelter pet die

a shelter dog needs a home more than breeders and pet stores need your money

www.petfinder.com
Shana – so it’s better to “save” the life of a pet store puppy while lining the pockets of the millers as opposed to saving one in a shelter or rescue where no one benefits but the dog?

Also, they usually just mark the price down as the pup gets older.

Nice try though… ;)
Just an FYI – most people consider their “breeder” reputible, even without health certs, etc.

Reputible breeders are (unfortunately) few and far between and the really good ones make little to no money off of the puppies – they do it for the love of and to better the breed.

http://stoppuppymills.org/

I don’t think even one of you can say that you are “saving a life” after READING this site. Shame on you for having the knowledge and still supporting people that breed dogs to the point that their vulva prolapses and then bury them alive or shoot them. No matter what, you gave money to thes evil people, thus supporting them, thus you might as well be cutting the vocal cords of the dogs yourselves.
poor Amanda…I actually think you believe that!
KZ you touched on many points and I hope others read you and feel your devotion and love for animals. Thank you for being genuine in your love for pets and I wish there were so many more of you. Bless your heart.
Lavetta, I am sorry you are so upset, seriously that was not my intent. I know sometimes it doesn’t take much to strike a nerve – but I am genuinally sorry. Also, thanks for the correct spelling. You might think I am being sarcastic but I would rather have someone correct me than to continue doing it wrong.

I don’t think I can even give thumbs up or down when it is my question? I have to wait until I can pick best answer, I believe.

I get very emotional at times and it is easy to become stressed out. It was a rough day at the animal shelter today, the economy is in ruins so the donations are low but there are so many more owner surrenders because people are losing their jobs and their homes. So sad. I didn’t mean to bring you down with me.

Answer by Cornelius Q. Rockefeller III
Most people who buy from BYBs and pet stores don’t know it’s bad. So yes, they still consider themselves pet lovers.

Answer by shana
Most people don’t know, or don’t think.

Additionally, if they do know, they realize that some pet stores who buy from mills will put the animals down if not sold quickly enough. Saving a life is saving a life.

Um, you asked a question and attacked me for accurately answering? You are silly. What happens after a dog hits six months in a store? Does that dog deserve to die more than any other?

Answer by Colten
Yes very much so.

Answer by ♥PomMom♥®™ ►Spay & Neuter◄
Of course! Many people don’t know better. Many years ago (22 to be exact, before I knew better) I bought a Min Pin from a pet store. That doesn’t mean I don’t love animals. It simply means that I was ignorant and didn’t have the knowledge I do now.

Answer by caulret
you cannot judge someone until you have been in their shoes. In other words only those without sin should throw stones.

Answer by ∞CHAO§ Gigalomaniax∞
Your additional details are BS. A responsible breeder does not contribute to the shelter dog problems. But a bad breeder does, dont clump all breeders together like that.

I agree most dont know, but thats really no excuse. Ignorance can be cured but stupidity cant.

Answer by daisydukes
I’m sorry but for you to think that people who buy from pet stores or byb’s are not true animal lovers, is just plain ignorant and stupid. Yes it is your opinon, but not everyone knows that buying from pet stores is contributing to pet over population or over crowding pet shelters.

Before I knew better I did get my dogs from pet stores, but now that I know I wouldnt do it again. I am a true pet lover, no matter where I got my dogs from!!!!!!!! No one can tell me different.

Yes, I feel bad about all the animals in shelters, but I can’t take responsibilty before I knew any better!!! My dogs are very healthy, great temperament, and just all around a great addition to my family, and yes I did get both of them from pet stores and yes I did pay lots of money for them. It didnt come out of anyone else’s pockets or purses and regardless of what or how people feel about it, I DONT CARE!!!!!

Besides, all animals need homes, and I gave two of them a wonderful, happy home….. So yes I did save a live, better yet, I saved two…..

Im not any less of a pet lover, if I got my dogs from the moon!!

***YOU ASK FOR PEOPLE’S OPINION’S THEN YOU CRITICIZE THEM, I SUGGEST YOU GET SOME COUNSELING***

Answer by star wisher
I know a few people who have gotten a dog from a pet store. They are good pet owners. They take their pets to the vet, love them, walk them, and consider them to be one of the family. I do not know why they bought one from the pet store. Maybe it was an impulse purchase. Personally, I will not even shop at a pet store that sells dogs and cats. Maybe they did not know about the awful conditions many pet store animals come from, although in this day and age I do not know how you could not. Or maybe they just did not want to think about it or think it was true or maybe they thought they were rescuing the puppy. Not realizing that they were supporting possible puppy mills and BYBs. Still to answer your question they are pet lovers and are good owners.

Answer by Lavetta B
Even people who purchase from pet stores etc. are in fact rescuing a dog. At the risk of getting hate mail, I will tell you that I purchased a puppy from a local pet store. If I had not done so, she would be dead today. She had mange, kennel cough and was covered in ticks. I couldn’t pass her up. I purchased her, took her immediately to the vet, spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills to treat mange, etc. Paid for training for her and she is absolutely the best dog I have ever had. And given the amount of problems she had, I doubt there would have been many who would have ridden it out to see what kind of dog she turned out to be. She is smart, talented and very good natured. I truly don’t remember what my life was like before I got her. I have 3 other dogs that were rescued along the side of the road so I think I can speak on all sides of this issue. Sometimes even dogs that are rescued from shelters are not treated the way we would hope. Let’s try not to criticize people who sincerely love their animals regardless of where they get them.

Definitely check out any rescues in your area–Paws with Pride (Akron), Ron’s Rescued Rascals (Kent), Paws and Prayers (Akron), and One of a Kind Pets (Akron) always have small dogs available for adoption.

All you have to do is to type “Chihuahua Rescue in Ohio” in your browser and click search. You will find every Chihuahua rescue in your state and can narrow it down from there. And do the same for “Small Dog Rescue in Ohio” or try typing “in or near Canton, Ohio” instead of just “Ohio.”

Dog Behavior Training – How Much Does Professional Dog Training Cost?

Dog Behavior Training – How Much Does Professional Dog Training Cost?

Dogs can be very difficult animals to deal with from time to time, some breeds and types can be especially difficult to train and control. No mater how much time and effort you seem to be putting in, your efforts give no results.

Don’t worry too much about persistently training you dog, it might not be your fault your dog is disobedient, people in different circumstances may be failing to train their dog for very simple reasons, whether it be your tone of voice, not having enough time to give your dog due to other commitments like work or hobbies, or your children throwing all the basic dog training rules out the window. Here we will try to educate you on the difference a professional dog trainer could have on your dog’s obedience, and how much it will cost.

The options available for dog training

Group dog training sessions locally – four to eight weekly 1 hour sessions for around – 0 (£20 – £70).

Private dog trainers visiting your home or work place to give personal training to your dog for around – 0 (£13 – £55) per hour.

Dog boarding kennel where your dog lives with the trainer for around 2 â€" 4 weeks getting many hours of professional dog behaviour training a day for around 00 â€" ,500(£550 â€" £1,300).

What you get for your money

So what do you get for your money? Many dog trainers concentrate on different areas of your dog’s obedience and you will usually get a much better service for the more money you pay. Standard training classes and trainers will concentrate on addressing the chewing, barking, biting and digging aspects of your dog’s behavior. Hand signals may also be covered in dog obedience classes along with showing you, the owner how to handle trickier situations that can only be over come at home like housetraining.

General guidelines for hiring a dog trainer are to always research the dog trainer well, find out qualifications the dog trainer has in his area of expertise and seek advice and information for other dog owners who have had their dogs trained previously. Get to know your trainer well before handing your dog over to him/her and make sure you are comfortable in the methods he/she uses.

Thanks!!! ♥

Answer by anon..
Yes, if your dog has any problems with swimming you should use one. If you plan on taking your dog on a boat etc.. even a great swimmer should have one.

Answer by trouble_sum81
20$$ wow that is DEFINITELY worth it. The cheapest I have ever seen them is 50$

Answer by Marie
YES! I take a camping trip up to Lake Tahoe every year. I won’t take my dogs on the boat without their life jackets. Tahoe is very cold and I fear they will jump out and go into shock from the cold water and drown. They look ridiculous and are expensive but worth it. The keep their heads up very well.

Answer by cassyshane2005
I take my dogs in the canoe with us all the time, and they both have life jackets that I picked up at petsmart. My small dog loves to swim in the pool, so she wears it in there too. They are worth the money, and 20 bucks is a steal!

Answer by Lucy ♫
I definitely suggest it — could save your dogs life if she’s having any trouble .. She may get tired and droop her head down, and drown. You’re also getting a good deal! The ones I see are like .. .

Answer by debra c
yep,, if your going out on a boat or where there is deep water . u should. .. get it dude!! thats a deal

Answer by ♥Pit Bull♥
Yes, I have one from Pet Smart for my Pit Bull.

My only complaint is it chaifs her neck…

Sometimes I take her to the beach to swim, and the waves are unpredictable, so it’s been a really great tool to ensure her safety.

It also has a handle on the back of it so I can attach a long line to it if I need to.

Yes! my cousins dachshund named Copper. Coppers owners have a pool, so when Copper gets hot they put the life jacket and drop him in the pool. I don’t think Copper swims he just floats!! Copper loves it so I think its worth 20$

What are my options for rehoming a dog that attacked another dog?

Question by lonestar: What are my options for rehoming a dog that attacked another dog?

My Doberman was on a leash and we were walking out of my apt. There was an unleashed dog on my doorstep. He viciously attacked the dog. I could not get him off of the other dog. Eventually, I did and the other dog has major wounds. I don’t even know if he will survive. (He’s at the vet now.) Do I have any options other than putting him down? My dog has always been very friendly and I think he thought he was protecting me.

Answer by Xman
Help find a home for the dog by putting up posters and makingcalls to people and stuff like that but until then i would keep it in a GOOD shelter, emphasis on good

Answer by BYB’s Use Small Magnums
You need to get a laywer ASAP.

Even if you think that your dog was protecting you, he acted improperly. Your dog needed to be properly trained to an “off” command so that this wouldn’t be an issue.

I’d also start calling behaviour modification trainers and get the dog assessed by them. If the aggression is genetic, he’ll need to never be around another dog or will need to be put down. But, if the trainers feel they can control or correct the problem, they may be good witnesses in court to show that your dog is not dangerous and will not have this problem again.

+ You also need to call your breeder. If he was a responsible breeder, he needs to know about the aggression and the breeder will REQUIRE that if you can’t keep the dog, it goes back to him. If you didn’t use a decent breeder and you have to rehome the dog, http://www.dpcarescue.com/ is Dobe rescue.

Answer by becca
Just because a dog is aggressive toward other dogs doesnt meant it will be toward people. Look for rescues or even sanctuaries. I work for a foster organization that had a dog that got into a fight with another larger dog and the dogs owner threw himself into the fight and got bit…. go figure. He went to a sanctuary in another state though. You may have to transport or pay for transport to the shelter or sanctuary but im sure theres one for dobermans. Just email whichever ones you find. Or email rescues like the spca they may have other resources that may help and that may be more difficult to find.

Answer by BMTHESPIAN
Your dog was properly restrained and the other dog was running loose. Legally the owner of the other dog bears full responsibility for the incident.

No he didn’t think he was protecting you. He is either dog aggressive in general or was responding in a territorial manner (other dog was in his territory so he responded as he saw fit) If he is dog aggressive in general he should be muzzled and leashed anytime he leaves your home. If he as never displayed signs of dog aggression in the past then you need to be conscious of your surroundings when you leave your home so this type of incident doesn’t happen again. (you can also still consider leaving him muzzled any time he leave your home.

This isn’t an indication that he is or will become human aggressive as at least one poster suggested. Dog aggression and human aggression are 2 very different things.

Opinions on why rescue groups buy dogs at auctions and puppy mills?

Question by gigi: Opinions on why rescue groups buy dogs at auctions and puppy mills?

Some rescue groups go to dog auctions and buy dogs there, others buy puppy mill puppies and retired dogs. In this way they’re saving the lives of the dogs they help, but what about the others??? Do you think they’re helping puppy millers doing this??? It’s a morally conflictive situation no??

Best answer:

Answer by LuvMyBT!
Unfortunately I think the puppymillers are going to keep doing what they are doing regardless.

At least they are helping some of those poor dogs!

Answer by tentoes
Before giving my opinion on this topic, do you have some kind of proof that shows that the rescue groups do this?

I’m sorry that I just can’t take your word for it ‘cus you say so’.

Answer by Vet Tech
I do believe these rescues are supporting puppy mills and rescues need to STOP doing this. In my opinion, they are just as bad as pet shops that sell the same dogs.

Obviously, these rescues are trying to get their breed out of auction so that they do not end up in the wrong hands or in a pet shop, but they are equally as guilty of supporting the mills and brokers!

Finally(!!!!) our local Newfoundland rescue has stopped purchasing puppies at these auctions. I wish other rescues would wake up and do the same. It has been my experience that mills will pump out more of the breeds rescues look for!

Answer by heroc07
It is sad that they can’t help all of the poor dogs. But they are saving as much as possible and at least those dogs aren’t going to horrible homes. I think that puppymills are going to continue to go on as long as people keep them in demand.

Answer by CF_
I have NEVER heard of any legit rescue “Buying” pets from anywhere.. most actually ask for a surrender fee when you bring your dog in…

I seriously question if any rescue would “buy” a pet.. its probably a collector NOT a rescue – most rescues have more pets than they have room for so certainly wouldnt need to go out and buy more…

Answer by marmaduke
I guess the sad fact is that people will always try to use animals to make money and there will never really be a lack of customers because there is little awareness about the situation. It is so hard to walk past a suffering animal and not want to help it but i think they should work on shutting these places down to save the animals rather than supporting them in an effort to save a few.

Answer by animal_artwork
They are giving puppymillers a way to profit off their reject stock.

“Hey Martha, we better get us another 8 b*tches to breed, we ran outta dogs to sell at last month’s auction! Nice of them to buy ol’ Duke, now I have space to put in a younger stud and a new b*tch or 2.”

Answer by Nandina (Miss Melon Collie)
It’s a tough call. On the one hand, if you get a dog out of a mill, it’s out of the breeding cycle and the dog (and its potential offspring) will never reproduce.

But it still creates a false demand for puppy mill dogs. The f*ckers that run the mills don’t care WHY someone buys their dogs, they just want the money.

Do you sacrifice the individuals in the hopes of bringing down the entire industry? Or do you do what you can to put a bandaid on the neverending flow of puppies by taking at least some of the potential breeders out of the mix and finding them responsible homes?

It’s a tough call.

Answer by Bozema
I think there is an inherent conflict, but I don’t support it because it continues to support the puppy mill and animal brokering business.

The individuals and groups that seem to get involved in this approach tend to breed specific rescues and are so devoted to their breed that they will do anything to get animals of that breed out of the situation. But I think it is short-sighted and does not solve the long-term problem. The government needs to provide better enforcement of laws to stop puppy mills, animal auctions and brokering.

Also, the money spent at these auctions could help a lot of other animals.

Does anyone know of a dog, small dog, or shi tzu rescue close to TN?

Question by ValentinaQuinn: Does anyone know of a dog, small dog, or shi tzu rescue close to TN?

Hello all. I’ve been searching on the net for a while and I’ve only found one shi tzu rescue site (I’ll be e-mailing shortly), but I need to find some more. If anyone knows of a shit tzu or small dog rescue, please post the information.
So here’s the story:
My sister made an incredibly irresponsible and immature decision a couple years ago to purchase a pricey Shi Tzu from an irresponsible breeder. So now with a 3y/o and a 2y/o she has a Shi Tzu that she never took the time to train or really housebreak. AND if she had done an ounce of research before getting this dog, she could have found out that Shi Tzu’s have a reputation for not being patient with kids. Really this is all my sister’s fault. She should not have gotten the dog to begin with as she did not have the time or money to care for it. So today when she was not watching them closely, the 3y/o handled the dog roughly and was bitten on the cheek badly. Now I need to quickly find a home for the dog or it could be put to sleep.

If you call a local vet or the ASPCA they will be able to give you those numbers. I also live in TN and I know that there are quite a few no-kill shelters all though a Shihtzu rescue would be best. The easiest way to find those numbers is to call a vet/animal shelter

Good luck!

Answer by ginbark
No reputable rescue or shelter will adopt out a dog with a biting history, you need to have the dog euthanized. Or rather your irresponsible sisier does. No shelter or rescue can risk being sued over a dog bite and they quickly lose their insurance if they have one, trust me, our rescue did and it along with the other rescues and shelters I work with never accept a biter and temperament test their dogs so any nipping is the axe for the dog. I have a Dobe who nipped/growled at a housekeeperin her second home and the shelter contacted me because they had to put her to sleep even tho it was possible she only growled. She was mistreated at her former home so is very touchy around people at home but fine in public. If you place the Shih Tzu then you are responsible for the dog if it bites and the people can sue you and your sisiter.

Answer by marci452
First, understand that Shi Tzu Rescue may not be able to take your sister’s dog. There are so many insurance issues with private rescue that many won’t take a biter no matter what the circumstances.

Here are several suggestions. Contact the national breed rescue and see if they have anyone in Tenn,
http://www.shihtzu.org/ASTC/rescue.asp?menu=ASTC

There is as Bluegrass Shih Tzu Rescue as well
http://www.bluegrassshihtzurescue.com/

If they can’t take the dog, ask them is they know of any private rescuers who might. Bless you for helping

I used to volunteer with a Shi Tzu rescue organization…contact them and see if they can help.

The Portuguese Water Dog - is it the right breed for you?

The Portuguese Water Dog – is it the right breed for you?

So, the Obamas have finally added that new puppy to their family, and his cute little face is staring at you from every newspaper/magazine/website you come across and suddenly you find yourself thinking “Aawww… he’s so sweet. I want one of those”

But wait…. just because the ‘First Family’ has one, it doesn’t mean YOU should! Every dog breed is different, with different needs, behavior, and requirements – and every home is different too.

Portuguese Water Dog puppies are adorable teddy bear ‘look-alikes’, and their lively and affectionate personalities makes them very endearing. But before all those cute photos in the media have you searching for a breeder with a puppy to sell, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to learn more about the breed, and figure out whether it’s the right ‘fit’ for you.

The Portuguese Water Dog is an old breed, know in it’s native land as Cao de Agua (literally meaning ‘dog of the water’). The ancestors of todays’ PWDs played an important role in their country’s’ fishing industry, and were used to herd fish, retrieve lines/tackle, carry messages from boat to boat or to shore, and act as guardians when protection was needed.

A medium to large sized dog, an adult will measure anywhere between 17 and 23 inches in height, and weigh between 35 and 60lbs. A female will usually be smaller/lighter than a male, but both sexes should be solidly built and muscular.

This courageous, hardy and spirited dog still carries the attributes of a working breed, and in spite of it’s cuddly looks, it is most definitely not a lap-dog. Portuguese Water Dogs need lots of vigorous exercise and an active lifestyle, but can be happy in an average-sized home/yard if given plenty of opportunity to run and play on a daily basis.

They bond closely with their owners and always want to be by your side. This isn’t an independent breed who can be happy left alone for long periods inside or out, and your Portuguese Water Dog pup will want (and need) to be an integral part of your family’s’ life.

Outgoing, intelligent and eager to learn, Portuguese Water Dogs make great obedience or agility dogs, and although often considered too small to fill the ‘service dog’ role, they can be great therapy dogs. Regular socialization and obedience training are very important if you want your PWD to grow up to be all that it can be.

Portuguese Water Dogs can make excellent family pets, and their exuberance and energy levels make them a lot of fun but they can sometimes ‘play rough’. They’re also known to be a ‘mouthy’ breed, and may nip/bite more than usual.

Although consistent correction will eliminate the mouthing and rough-housing, if you have very young children you may want to take this into account. Generally this breed is fine with other dogs, and can live alongside cats if introduced to them early on.

Their tendency towards ‘mouthiness’ can also show up as excessive chewing, and you’ll need to make sure you have a lot of very sturdy chew toys handy for your Portuguese Water Dog puppy (or your home and belongings will suffer!).

The long wavy or curly hair that makes them so adorably ‘shaggy’, needs regular grooming and a daily brush or comb is the best way to keep matts and tangles at bay. Regular clipping or trimming is also recommended.

Portuguese Water Dogs have a single layer coat which is very low-shedding and this means they are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. If you or your children have dog hair allergies, this breed is less likely to trigger symptoms. However, it’s important to remember that allergies vary greatly from person to person, and there’s no such thing as an ‘allergy-free’ dog breed.

It’s best to spend some time around any breed you are considering BEFORE buying a puppy, that way you can find out exactly how you’re affected by them.

If this breed sees a sudden growth in popularity, finding a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder may become a bit more difficult. Poor breeding practices fueled by the prospect of a quick financial profit, have been responsible for a decrease in the overall health and looks of many breeds in the past.

If you decide that a Portuguese Water Dog is the one for you, take the time to find a responsible breeder with dogs who have been screened for potential genetic/hereditary conditions, and who offers a health contract.

Some conditions that may be found in this breed, and for which screening is available for breeding stock, include Hip Dysplasia, GM1 Storage Disease, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), and Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy. If the breeder you’re talking to asks you a lot of questions, that’s a good sign… it means that she really cares about the homes her puppies go to.

When it comes to the adoption v purchase issue, there are some very strong feelings on both sides! There are thousands of dogs in shelters and pounds all around the country who are in desperate need of loving homes, and they’re almost always there through no fault of their own.

Adoption should always be considered when you’re adding a new puppy/dog to the family, even if you have your heart set on a purebreed, because there are many purebred rescue organizations.

However, Portuguese Water Dogs are not in the same position as, say, Labrador Retrievers. There simply isn’t the same number (or even close to it!) of puppies or dogs looking for new homes as there is with the more popular and well known breeds. Finding a Portuguese Water Dog breeder in your area is going to be a challenge, and the chances of finding a purebred PWD being in a local rescue center or pound are very slim.

There may be mixed-breed pups who have Portuguese Water Dog ancestry, and these will make just as wonderful a pet as any purebred puppy – but, if you want a purebred pup who can be registered, buying from a reputable breeder is probably going to be your best option.

So, IS the Portuguese Water Dog right for your family and lifestyle?

…. If you’ve read this whole article and can honestly say that you can provide a Portuguese Water Dog with a home environment where it can thrive, the time and attention it needs, AND you’re still in love with that adorable teddy-bear look, I wish you and your new best friend a long and happy life together.
