Question on starting a small dog rescue or fostering?

Question by ♥This is Midnight♥: Question on starting a small dog rescue or fostering?

Let me just say I know it’s allot of work, I work for someone who raises dogs and has more then a couple, I work for her so know that it’s allot of work with allot or dogs. I also know they are allot of money to care for. :) Not that I necessarily want allot of rescues at once. I am just wondering what your average(if there are any) requirements are for having a small dog rescue are.

I would love to have a breed specific rescue like Aussie or Chihuahua. Aussies because I own one and adore him and know there are many people who find them to much to handle.

Chihuahuas because I also own one and I know that this is another breed people can get sick of(their stubbornness and can be nippy/yippy). But these are 2 of my favorite breeds and want to do something to help them!

Thank you to all.

This is a good question. I’ll star because I want to see other answers, as in the future I hope to take in/set up a rescue home for gun dog breeds.

You have to start off small (obviously. Create a website and explain yourself/goals. Post little adds in pet shops (eg. will take in dogs needing homes etc)- that kind of thing, and get yourself known to vets, dog walkers, groomers, other shelters etc even add an add in a doggy magazine.
Best of luck

Answer by hayesbrat
we were actually wanting to do the same thing one day when we own a home with land and have time with bulldogs. my mom actually owned her own rescue. but the best way to start is to make yourself known. start off working with breed specific shelters in your area as a foster and offer to take any that need a home. then you can kind of work thru them and at the same time branch off and do your own thing as well.

To measure the width of your dog’s foot, place the foot on a piece of paper and press down on the top of the foot, mimicking how the foot spreads when the dog’s walking. Compare this to the boot sizes. the foot should be smaller than the boot size.

Are Shitzu dogs ok with staying home alone?

Question by Naya: Are Shitzu dogs ok with staying home alone?

Our family is thinking about getting a Shitzu dog, but we want to make sure we find a breed that will be ok with staying home while my parents go to work and us kids go to school. We all leave by at least 8:00 and the soonest anyone gets home is about 3:00, if I come home right after school. If a shitzu is not a good breed to be left alone, do you know of any other breeds (small dogs, my mom doesn’t want any big or medium sized ones) that will be fine alone until we get home.
Oops wrong spelling…its Shih-Tzu

Answer by Trojan
nah they shitz every where lol

Answer by Yankeefan1986
They hate being home alone at least mine does…try answering some of my questions in my profile please!

Answer by shelynn102002
It’s a small dog so I don’t know. It also depends on the dog. Some dogs are neurotic and don’t like to be left alone.

You should consult with a veterinarian, an animal shelter, and get some books on different breeds. It would seem a bigger dog would be better because they have larger bladders. However, there are so many breeds. I could not recommend one. It depends on your lifestyle and experience. Do your homework before you get a dog please. Visit a shelter. Once you take a dog in, it’s yours for life. So be careful.

Answer by M@caroni
A shih tzu would be perfect for your situation. I am a shih tzu owner and my dog stays at home, well in the backyard, by herself alot during the day while everyone goes to work and stuff. She really enjoys staying out, exploring the backyard and etc. Just make sure you give them plenty of fresh water and food while you’re out and maybe some toys for the dog to play with and a doggie house. Good luck!

Answer by erinsuzy
Maybe your family should consider getting a cat instead. Dogs need attention. Lots of attention. Some dogs you can leave at home alone all day and they’re fine, others get into things and tear up the house. It doesn’t really depend on the breed, it depends on the dog and his/her personality. You can crate train any dog and put him in his crate while you’re gone, but depending on the age and, again, temperament, he may not do well for more than an hour or two in the crate. The longest you should keep a dog in a crate is 8-10 hours. The other problem with crating a dog is that she may not get the exercise she needs. You would have to walk her for a half hour before you leave, and for at least an hour in the evening when you come home.
Dogs need attention, love, and exercise. You cannot get a dog expecting him to fit in with your family’s schedule. A cat or a small animal (mouse, rat, guinea pig) may be a better option.

Answer by greekman
All dogs can be left home alone, provided they are NOT spoiled. 99% of people work or go to school or have a life and must leave their homes at some time. Put the dog in a crate when you leave the house and he will be fine.
Remember, pick a dog that is clear in the head and do not spoil it so there will be no problems later on. Good luck.

Answer by Barb R
I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the breed, so much as the individual dog. I’ve had all different breeds in my rescue efforts and as personal pets. Some did well at home alone, some did not. If you’re getting a very young dog, you might have a better chance of it not having separation anxiety. If you adopt an adult dog from a rescue, the foster home will be able to tell you if the dog will be okay alone. In fact, if you adopt from a rescue you can tell them up front that you need a dog that will be okay on its own from 8 to3 each day and they will be able to help you select one of their rescues that suits you. Good Luck.

Answer by Jessica
Shih tzus tend to have a hard time when being home alone. Ours used to find papers items and shred them and spread them all across the house. Crate training can help the problem, but I wouldn’t recommend a Shih tzu to a family who doesn’t have at least one person home most of the time.
I recommend going to this site: glowdog.com/bestdog and taking the survey. It will give you a good idea of breeds that would work well for your family.

Answer by cozmikmif
my aunt and uncle had 3 of them
they got kinda lonely when their family or the housekeeper wasnt around.. Id be over there alone and the dogs seemed pretty depressed… although I think it might have alot to do with how they are raised becuase either the family or the housekeeper was prestent 24/7 for all the dogs lives sooo

This breed is more closely related to the wolf than any other breeds. Whether a star in the ring or at home, the Shih Tzu is one of the oldest breeds of dog

Yorkie Health Issues

Yorkie Health Issues

Yorkies can be great pets, but just like all other dog breeds, they have their fair share of health issues. This article will you understand the common health issues associated with Yorkie dogs.

* Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, most commonly happens when Yorkies have too much time between meals. However, it can also be caused by stress, depression, fatigue, malnutrition, infections, bacteria, and even parasites. It is important to look for the signs of Hypoglycemia if you are a Yorkie owner. Some of the signs are drowsiness, red-eyed, and disorientation. If you see any of these signs you should take your Yorkie to the Veterinarian to be treated immediately. Hypoglycemia can cause brain damage, seizures, comas, and in some cases death.

* Being small can unfortunately cause problems with Yorkies. Small children running through the house may step on one, or just an object may fall over on them, and it doesn’t take much weight to deal serious injury to a small Yorkie. Their bodies are so small that everything affects them more, even toxins, such as anti-freeze, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, and other household chemicals. Keeping a close eye on your Yorkie at all times is the best way to prevent them from getting into harmful toxins, or being injured.

* Tracheal collapse is a medical aliment occurring over time, which caused by the weakening of the walls of the trachea. Tracheal collapse is a common health problem in all small dog breeds. Tracheal Collapse can cause a Yorkie to whelp and cough. If you see these signs, you should take them to the Veterinarian. Sometimes, surgery can repair the trachea.

* Bladder stones are common in Yorkies. They form in the urinary tract, and can cause the inability to urinate, and even death. Some signs of bladder stones in Yorkies are blood in their urine, and less frequent urinating. A simple x-ray can determine if their is a bladder stone there.

* Sensitive skin is another common issue among Yorkies. Many have allergies and will bite or scratch their skin, which leads to damaging their skin. A Veterinarian can suggest a type of lotion depending on you’re Yorkies condition.

* Delicate digestive systems can cause Yorkies to have diarrhea and vomiting from diet changes or not eating the correct meals.

Healthy Yorkies can live up to 15 years, that’s why it’s important to take care of our Yorkies. Be sure you’re Yorkie has a proper diet and taken to the Veterinarian regularly. Hope this helps!

Why do a lot of women buy dogs like there accessories?

Question by NONAME: Why do a lot of women buy dogs like there accessories?

My sister as well as many other women i see buy little foofy dogs just so they can walk around with the dog sticking out of there purse. WTF? Are they that insecure that they need to spend all that money on a very odd fad? It’s a dog not a hat, scarf, or a pair of pants. I feel bad for those dogs.

Dog Accessories anyone?

Question by Believe!: Dog Accessories anyone?

I saw this yorkie that had a bow barrett in her hair and it looked really cute. does anyone know where i can get some? and do you know any store that has cute dog clothes and accessories?

Best answer:

Answer by Amy
I bought 6 outfits from www.dogdug.com and they were very cheap and really cute and the shipping was very reasonable, and they ship worldwide.
I think there is a good few other online sites that sell dog accessories like hair clips and bows quite cheap.

Answer by Drew
Try the pet store or maybe a craft fair. For online stores, there are plenty and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one.

Answer by Paigeyr
Try www.theritzyrover.com, They have all of the latest accessories and outfits for dogs.

Answer by californiadreamer92
try pet boutiques they usually sell cutsie stuff like that

here’s what I found when I googled dog accessories
http://www.thepamperedpup.com/

Answer by Lauren
Okay, stuff like hair bows and bananas are fine, but do NOT, I repeat NOT get them clothes!!! Unless your dog is a chihuahua and can’t stand the cold, do NOT get your dog a sweater!!! Have you seen how miserable other dogs look in it? Dogs do not need to wear clothes (except for extremely short-haired dogs in cold winters) because they already have fur. I feel sorry for dogs that have to wear those ‘cute’ little hoodies and sweaters. They absolutely hate it. It’s cruel and unusual punishment.

Wow…. got a little… rant-ish there. But seriously, no dog wants to wear clothes. They already have fur, which keeps them warm and protected.

I have nothing against bows and bananas, though.

I want to start a small at home dog rescue..?

Question by sweetr72: I want to start a small at home dog rescue..?

I met someone with a 3 month german shepard pup that he needs to find a home for asap. I offered to take the pup and find a home for him instead…this has prompted me to try and start an at home small scale rescue for dogs. I am in Canada where do I start..what do I need to do and how do I do it? Anyone who has started their own rescue..please share you stories of how you got started. How can I get a not for profit charity started or something to that effect?? I really want to do this as I work at home full time and have three teenagers that are more than willing and ready to help me out also. My husband and I are going to take the shepard pup to the vet on Monday for a vet check and talk to him about working out a spay/neuter special fee for rescue…hopefully this will help but I could use TONS of advice..

Thanks!!
Wow what wonderful information everyone has provided!! There are a number of things I have thought about tonight and things I never even thought about that were brought up here!! Terrific!! I have a large 6 bedroom home and am working on building a website so I can post pictures to prospective families and am now working on a contract and will contact my local spca on Monday. I am going to try and find a vet that will accomodate my needs also. I am going to start VERY small, one dog at a time until I can broaden my vision with volunteers. I hope very much that this works out as dogs are my life…I so appreciate your help with this and I will keep this saved on favorites so that I can go back and read over all this information again and again. Thank you for the well wishes and the prayers I know Im going to need them lol..but with God anything is possible right??!!

Best answer:

Answer by mom of 4
i think its great that you have the time to do this , your a good person for it to , may God bless you and keep you safe

Answer by star gazer
Wonderful!! I would definitely talk to your local SPCA and let them know your intentions….maybe they can lead you in the right direction, and perhaps provide training!

Answer by bluebettalady
We started a rescue home in my area. We began with a few small kennels and a large running area to let the dogs out. In speaking to vet’s we were able to determine which vet’s were willing to reduce fees to assist us. We then went to the public asking for donations in food, old blankets, toys and such.
We created a web site, introduce small change boxes at local business asking for money to aid us in addition to having fund raising events (we sold doggie treats and had a doggie wash!)

We were able to get other individuals involved and create foster homes for animals and we now have 5 foster homes (2 for dogs, 2 for cats and 1 for small animals!) We do spay or neuter all animals before they leave and all homes are well screened for any potential problems.

Answer by FairlyErica
That sounds fantastic!

One thing I’d suggest is contacting other rescues in the general area and asking them the same questions you ask here about non-profit status and that sort of thing. They can probably give you a lot of advice on a couple of topics that may have legal or tax implication to your specific region or province, including:

* Non-profit paperwork
* Advise about any legal restrictions on the number of dogs you can keep at one time without a kennel license
* How to file taxes around costs (vet bills, food, etc) and income (adoption fees, donations)

Even if I could give you the full low-down on those, they wouldn’t be the same for you as they are here in Virginia, U.S.A.

Plus, suggestions for, or even samples of, paperwork you will need to have together for:
* Taking a dog in to your rescue (making sure they are legally signed over from their owners)
* Releasing a dog from a shelter (around here, you can’t just walk up and take the dog… rescues need to establish the relationship with the shelter)
* Application for adoption, including adoption fee (you do NOT want to give the dogs out for free, and you will want to do some level of screening, likely including pre-approval home visits)
* Adoption contract, including requirement to return the dog to you if the new family will not keep it for any reason, and any other requirements you decide to put in place (such as “dog must be kept as an indoor companion and not an outside dog”)

You should be able to find some great example of some of the above paperwork from various rescue websites… just don’t try to take any of it directly for your own use without permission.

You will also want to make some decisions about:
* How many dogs do you want to have in rescue at any given time? I am involved with one rescue that places a couple dogs a year and another rescue that has dozens of dogs at any given time. Naturally, the latter rescue requires significantly more in the way of volunteers, foster homes, and donations.

* How many volunteers do you expect to have outside the family? Will you seek out foster homes where you can temporarily place dogs while you look for their forever home? How about people to help with fundraising? Anyone who can help manage the paperwork you’ll need to keep on each dog? Some volunteers to help to home visits before approval of new adopters? Trainers who might volunteer time with any post-adoption training issues that might come up?

* What criteria will you use to select which dogs you will accept into rescue? Some rescues are breed specific, some are specific to a size or type of dog (little dogs only, herding breeds, northern breeds, black dogs), some might choose to simply work with one or more shelters and specifically pull dogs that have great temperament but are out of time at the shelter. Will you accept dogs with temperament problems? Health problems? How severe or a health or temperament problem will you accept? Will you accept dogs from people who call you out of the blue and say they want to get rid of their dog? People who show up on your doorstep? How many dogs will you accept at any given time? Are you prepared to say “No” to some of the dogs when you’re out of room and resources, even knowing that the dog may be put to sleep? Make sure you think about the answers to these questions ahead of time, before you come across them in practice — it can be easy to take on too much and become overwhelmed, and if you get burnt out, it means you save one or two more dogs in the short run but far fewer in the long run.

* Will you require spay/neuter before you let a dog be adopted? Will you always have their basic shots done, or will you sometimes require that the adopter handle some of the medical necessities?

* How will you select adopters? Will you require that they be within a certain local area (such as, from your province) or can they be from anywhere? Will you do home visits (strongly recommended)? What will cause you to reject a foster? It happens very rarely in my rescue, but adopters are turned down if they will keep the dog outside full-time or if they will transport the dog unprotected in the back of a pick-up truck, for examples.

One idea you should consider is to team up with an existing local rescue rather than start from scratch. The benefits are that you don’t have to come up with all of the paperwork and process, you won’t have to worry about administrivia like taxes, but you could be very involved with fostering plus they can ALWAYS use people with your level of gumption and energy. Even if there is not a rescue near you that is a good match, considering offering to form a “branch” of another rescue that is farther away. Even if you are still somewhat on your own, you have a great network of experienced rescue volunteers to help you out on a regular basis. And even if you still form your own rescue, get out there and meet some of these other people, in person or over the Internet, and network, network, network. Knowing a lot of people, and having them know you and know what you are doing, can be invaluable to helping you save a lot of dogs.

I’m sure there is a lot I didn’t cover here, but hopefully some of hte above will give you some ideas of items you’ll want to think about as you get started in rescue. Good for you for taking the initiative, and I wish you the best of luck!

Answer by Sweetiepie!
Well I would say that is that you need a larger house if you have an apartment and that you can also say to the doctor that you need the special fee reduction because the amount that you might get might raise the fee and it wont be great for your finances so youcan get more dogs to hrelp the poor animals that are to left on the street brecause their owners are to stupid to take any care of them, I think what you are doing is the best thng i have evr heard of the normal people in this world doing, you are the type of people this world needs more of!

What Are Signs Of A Dog Ear Infection?

Question by Lemons: What Are Signs Of A Dog Ear Infection?

My dog scratches her ears alot and then my other dog started doing it to and anytime i try to look at them they wont let me and are very squirmy. Any Ideas if this could be an infection, but if not what then?

Best answer:

Answer by graduatecj08
My dog would shake his head like crazy or rub his ears on the floor. You should probably call the vet and see if you can get some ear drops.

Answer by blastie123456789
Yes, the shaking of the head, scratching of the ears are good signs.

You can also take a brief sniff of his ears too. (I know, kinda gross) If they stink, he probably has an infection.

Clean the ears too, if you get a bunch of gunk, and later in the day can get more gunk out of the ears … probably an infection.

Make sure to visit your vet, as they will prescribe something to get rid of the infection.

Answer by zzhoundzz
Get a cleaning solution from your vet.Have the vet show you how to clean their ears as to pick up on the ear so the swab does not go in too far an punture the eardrum. It must be done,,it is part of being a dog owner. If the wax is dark brown they will also needs drops from the vet.Follow directions to the end. Sometimes dogs have this problem when their ear canal is too narrow causing not enough air flow in the ear to dry up~common in floppy eared dogs.

Answer by bianca a
my dog had an ear infection and her ears smeld very bad and she was scratshing all the time. I got her some Antibacterial Ear Drops & Cleaner from the Pet shop. She was fine after using it regular and as it sais on the Directions

Answer by Jason Homan
Hi Lemons!!! You can not treat this at home; she needs a vet as soon as possible. Some of the common things that could have caused this problem include; allergies, mites, bacteria, infection, something actually getting into the ear, diseases, and yeast infection (and this isn't even a complete list if that gives you any idea of how many different things can have the symptoms you are describing.)

If she continues to scratch them and you don't take her to the vet she could rupture her eardrum if she hasn't already. Your vet should clean the ears and teach you how to (must be careful if done incorrectly more damage could be caused.) He may have to sedate the dog depending on how painful it is for her. He will then take samples to see what is wrong with her. Most likely she will need medication (antibiotics, yeast cream ect or so forth depending on the problem.)

I am sorry !!!. Lots of luck!!!
Jason Homan

Answer by badgirl41
ear mites or an ear infection will cause them to scratch at their ears. Seeing your other dog is starting to do it also my guess would be ear mites. It would be best to go to the vet and have it checked out, but they do sell ear mite medicine at the pet store.

why do old navy stores have a section for dog clothes and accessories but nothing for plus size people?

Question by : why do old navy stores have a section for dog clothes and accessories but nothing for plus size people?

Best answer:

Answer by K
Our Old Navy has plus sizes. It must just be your store.

Answer by canuckfan918
Hey don’t worry!
It’s probally your store that doesn’t carry any sizes for plus size people. When you do go to your local store, inquire a sales associate on the style you want and tell them your size. They can do a inventory check or they can check to see if other stores have your size on the particular style.

Tell me how it goes!

Dog Training - Low Maintenance Dog

Dog Training – Low Maintenance Dog

There are so many different dog breeds and dog crossbreeds around the world now that finding the perfect dog for you can seem a hugely daunting task. Sure, your perfect dog is probably out there somewhere but finding that dog is a completely different thing.

To help you narrow your search down I have taken the time to put this article together and give my best advice on which dog will be best for you if you're looking for a low maintenance dog for your new home, family or any other occasion.

Ok, you want a low maintenance dog breed so what is the answer? There are many aspects to this question and many dogs to consider, some are realty energetic like the Labrador, border collie and Irish setter but other breeds just seem to be pretty much as energetic as each other.

Maintenance may not mean weather the dog you want is energetic and needs lots of walks and exercise and it may be other forms of dog maintenance like grooming, dog training and bathing etcetera. These differences in dog breed personalities and care are very hard to determine and sum up into a final list of perfect dog breeds as all dogs will need time and care.

The main question here ids weather you are really ready for a dog in your home or place of residence. Dogs do take lots of time especially when they are young and impressionable puppies or dogs. If you want a low maintenance dog then the option for you is to not have a dog at all. Dogs take a big commitment in your life and need to be cared for appropriately in order to be healthy and happy. If you are unsure take more time to ponder your choices and priorities, it will save you a lot of time and unwanted effort in the long run.

How much would a yorkie (dog) be?

Question by Abby: How much would a yorkie (dog) be?

I thought a yorkie would be a good dog for me because it is small it, doesn’t bite and easy care.If anyone finds another dog like that please tell me.

Best answer:

Answer by Linda Lu
depends on where you get it. it can range from 500 to 1,500 dollars for a pure breed dog, but if you get lucky and find a yorkie at the pound, 35 dollars.

Answer by LizzyB
and they bark constantly, are very hyper, they do bite if they aren’t properly socialized, and they are TERRIERS. Translate that into TERRORS and then you will be prepared to own one.

Answer by rob
it is small.
it can be very nippy and bark a lot if you don’t train it.
and it is more care intensive than many other dogs.
for one, it has hair instead of normal dog fur. this requires more grooming than normal. also, as it is small, it also has a small bladder which requires you to let it out more often than other dogs.

they are good dogs, but don’t think that they are easy to take care of.
depending on the exact size you get, they will range from 0 – 00. the smaller ones cost more.

Answer by elie
Yorkies run anywhere from 0.00 on uo to ,500.00 It just depends on their background and also if the parents were show dogs. You can get a very nice one for 4 to 5 hundred dollars by just watching you local newspaper.

Answer by .cg.
well they are alot of money!!!! i have two chihuahuas and i know people say they are really mean!!! but if you buy them and a puppy and train them to be nice they are and they are really cute as puppies!!! remember to take pictures because you will miss them small and with that cute puppy dong face!!! :)

Answer by Mutt for the Truth
Who told you they don’t bite? ANY dog that is poorly trained, socialized, etc WILL bite – it’s up to YOU, the owner, to make sure they do not through proper training, socialization, mental stimulation, etc.

Yorkies and other small dogs are notorious nippers because MANY people don’t bother to do anything with them – they’re also known to be spoilt rotten….

A for “easy to care for”… again, where DID you get your info? Yorkies need as much care as any other dog – they need daily food and water, They need to be housebroken (harder to do because of their small inards.) They need to be taught basic manners and obedience, they need socialization with other dogs and people to prevent aggression. They need daily walks. They need daily brushing AND frequent trip to the groomers for clipping. They need vet visits…

About the only “easy” thing is they have smaller poop, aren’t hard to control, and they don’t cost as much because they’re smaller. Just keep that in mind – even a small dog will need work.

A Yorkie from a reputable breeder will be 0+ for pet quality, ,300+ for show quality. From a rescue i etimate anywhere from -0. That is NOT including initial supply costs, first vet check, monthly fees, or any emergencies that may pop up.

I spent over 0 on start up fees for my dog and i spend around 0 a month for her monthly needs (food, prevention, etc.) One visit for an ear infection was around , another for allergies (chewing paws) was around 0.

Owning a dog isn’t THE most expensive thing ever, but it sure isn’t cheap. If you don’t have a reliable income that takes care of YOUR needs and brings in more than enough extra, don’t get a dog. If you’re going to be relying on ONLY paying for things on payday, don’t get a dog (the vet and emergencies won’t wait for your paycheck.)

welll, I have a yorkie-POO

I think he is sooooo adorable! But I guess other people didn’t because he started off at 1500 dollars, and they had to keep reducing him. He ended up being only 400.

But, on august 25, I’m getting a jack russell, thats only 200 bucks….. Its not from the pet store, so I guess they get their cuts!

Is their Antibiotic for dog ear infection I can get without a precipitation RX!?

Question by crystle: Is their Antibiotic for dog ear infection I can get without a precipitation RX!?

Antibiotic for dog ear infection
I’ve looked and cant find anything and i can’t drive so my only option right now is buying online!

Best answer:

Answer by Jhay Chiong
There are two different types of ear infections generally seen in dogs. The first is called otitis media, which affects the middle ear, and the second is known as otitis externa, which is an infection of the outer ear canal. Either of these ear infections can be successfully treated by your veterinarian. The problem comes when the infection is not treated quickly and efficiently; then serious problems – and damage – can result.

Answer by bluescorpi36
I know that Petsmart has an ear cleaning and disinfecting kit. If you really need an antibiotic go to a feed store they sell them there, I don’t know what state your in but out here in the So. Ca. area we have Centinela, and Aneheim feed, to name a few, but usually anywhere that sells horse supplies and other types of animal supplies should have some.

Answer by vx
You do know that antibiotics aren’t a magic bullet that cures everything. In fact there is a lot they won’t work on. By using antibiotics unnecessarily, you will also aid the spread of antibiotic resistant illnesses. Just a little something to think on.

shelter or maybe aa breeder if im looking for show quality but NEVER EVER EVER a petstore

Answer by julie d
Never from a pet store!!!!! Either adopt a dog from the Humane Society or a shelter, or get a pup from a reputable and responsible breeder.

Answer by Meggy Jo
Both my dogs are rescues.

Never buy from a pet shop.
They get the puppys from backyard breeders and puppy mills.

Answer by dolphfr1975
I don’t know anyone that’s had luck with a store dog. I’ve bought from breeders and the humane society and have always been happy. My current dog was a shelter dog and is the best. He loves everyone, and has been nothing short of fantastic.

I feel bad for the woman that gave him up. It must have been hard.

Answer by kelseycaye
save a shelter animal. they are perfectly good dogs. you can find purebreds, trained dogs, etc. i’ve gotten all three of my current dogs from shelters.

by buying a dog from a petstore, you could potentially be supporting puppy mills.

Answer by your name here
definitely get a dog from a shelter, these poor animals have neglected, abused and need a loving home. By adopting a dog you are saving it’s life and giving another dog a chance at being adopted. Also, most places where you adopt from will make sure that that dog is a perfect match to your lifestyle. By buying a dog from a pet store or a local breeder you creating an increasing market for more dogs to reproduce and therefore more dogs are ending up in shelters and on the streets.

Answer by Kizzy
Shelter!
It’s rescuing a dog that might otherwise be put down, and usually they are already toilet trained, etc.

Answer by Susan
Shelter, I’ll never adopt from anywhere else.

About Buying Dogs Online

About Buying Dogs Online

There are several things to be aware of when you are buying dogs online. When you purchase a dog online you want to make sure that you are dealing with a reputable dog breeder. There are many dog breeders who operate online with fraudulent licenses.

Dog breeders that operate online may skirt inspections laws and federal licensing regulations. Many animal rights advocates warn people who are buying dogs online to make sure that you check into the background of the dog breeder. The Internet has allowed many large-scale dog breeding operations crop up. These operations are also known as puppy mills. The biggest concern is that breeders who sell dogs on the Internet are able to get around licensing laws and breeding regulations. This is because since the breeders work online the breeders are not considered to be wholesalers. This is how the breeders slip through the cracks.

If an Internet buyer purchases a dog that is of poor health there are no laws that protect you. There is no recourse that you could take. Some of the puppies that are sold over the Internet are diseased because of disgusting kennel conditions or have a genetic defect due to improper breeding techniques.

Know that there are many reputable dog breeders who do operate online. You can find a healthy dog when shopping online. You just have to take safety precautions when buying a dog online.

Before you buy a dog online you want to research the type of dog that you want. Some dogs are good with other pets while other breeds are more independent. You want to know information about the breed of dog you are purchasing before you make the purchase. This way you will ensure that you are purchasing the perfect dog for your family and home.

The Veterinary Secret - Dog Illnesses

The Veterinary Secret – Dog Illnesses

A lot of us consider our pet dogs as parts of our family. This kind of treatment often pushes us to give our pet dogs enough attention. As members of our family we always try to keep our canines in top shape and free from dog illnesses. We often cannot tell if our pet dogs are not feeling well because they will more likely not look like they are. It can be helpful to familiarize ourselves with some of the symptoms of usual dog illnesses.

Click Here For The Veterinary Secret Best Deal Now!

One of the earliest signs that our beloved canines are not feeling well is sluggishness. It is normal for dogs to sleep a lot but you must take note that even when they are asleep, they can wake up and be alert at any time. So if your pet dog starts to slow down and it is not because of their old age, it can be due to anemia. Sluggishness may also be due to tender leg so try to check if your pet dog is limping. Try to see if there are painful areas. When you do so, make sure that you are using a firm but gentle approach.

Dog illnesses also affect your pet canine's appetite. Any loss of appetite can be a result of ill health. Dogs are known to drink a lot of water but if display signs of excessive thirst, it could be something else. Another indicator of ailing health is distinct weight loss.

Other symptoms of dog illnesses include ulcers, sores, veins, and discharges in your pet's eyes. You should also check the color of your canine's mouth. A healthy dog usually has a pink mouth. Discolorations or cavities in their teeth are also signs of ill health. It is also advisable to regularly clean your pet's ears as discharges in this area are also telltale signs that your dog is not feeling well.

Prevention is better than cure, so the popular adage goes. Therefore, to keep your beloved pet free of dog illnesses, see to it that the necessary vaccines have been administered to them. It can also be a lot of help to have them regularly checked by veterinarians.

Dog Training - Treats

Dog Training – Treats

There are many choices when it comes to rewarding your dog with a treat for obeying your commands, and these treats make a big difference in your dog's attitude towards you in learning new tricks, and why wouldn't they? To get anything in life you have to give something back and dogs are no different, you help them and they'll help you. Simple.

But what are the best rewards and treats to give your dog in times of good behavior? Well for starters you won't be short of treats to try, the markets as it is now is full to the brim of all the fancy rewards and treats you could ever think of.

One of the favourite for dog owners is to treat their dog to homemade treats from recipes that can be found across the internet in many places, some of my favourites and personal recommendations are listed in the products page of www.dog-behavior-training.co.uk along with other tips on dog training there.

Consumer products are also a good choice when rewarding your dog; these include chewing toys which can be very rewarding for puppies and dogs alike. Saving one of their favourite toys for when they behave well makes everything more exciting for your dog and causes them to want to perform more for this reward.

If a chew toy is not to your dogs liking then they may instead enjoy a tug toy, tug toys are good for your dog's teeth the same as chew toys are and it enhances the relationship between you and your dog as you play with them. Be careful while using these toys as some dogs may think of this game as good behaviour and will start tugging on trousers or other annoying or destructive things.

The last toys I am going to talk about are the throwing toys; these are good to calm your dog down when they are over active or if you just want to reward your dog with quality playing time for their good behavior. These toys range from a simple tennis ball to special durable dog Frisbees and help you to react with your dog wile also training playing the 'fetch' game.

There are lots more dog toys available, probably at your local pet shop. It is a good idea to keep in mind what textures and current toys your dog likes to play with or chew before making your choice but as long as your dog enjoys it, it can be used as a good reward and training method.

What do you need to open a small rescue organization for dogs?

Question by No it isn’t.: What do you need to open a small rescue organization for dogs?

I want to have my own small dog rescue. I would have a few volunteers who could foster some dogs and I’d foster dogs. I already know about all the investigating I need to do when I find new homes because I worked with a rescue a long time ago. But I want to know have my own. Is there some kind of guidelines I need to follow legally? Do I have to register it? It would all be volunteers.
Thanks!

Lotsa money and lotsa room.

Answer by Beth J: In the Pits
This is a wonderful venture and will give you a lot of long sleepless nights, but the rewards are worth it.

To begin The one thing you will need to make sure of before your bring dogs in is that you have the adequate space for them and have a means of separating them for quarantine. You do not want to bring dogs in and have one get sick and then infect all the others, so use good judgment in how many you can handle. Make sure you have enough kennels to keep them separated as needed.
In the beginning,m it may be a very good idea to work with another rescue, while you are waiting for your 501c3 to come through. You will need that in order to raise funds for the rescue. Go to the IRS site and enter in “tax exempt status forms.” There you can print off the forms you will need and it will tell you all that you need to be approved.
I am also listing two good sites that I think give a clear idea of what you need to start.
Another thing that some people choose to do while waiting for their tax exempt status and waiting for their kennels to be set up is to foster a few dogs for another rescue. This will help you get your feet wet. Again, just make sure you have the space to separate the dogs should they get sick. Also, each county may have their own guidelines about how many you can take in. Working hand in hand with another rescue has many benefits. You will need to work together once you become established and this will give you a wonderful start at a good relationship.
Also, you can be learning the ropes from this rescue. You will quickly learn what you need just to start and they can also help you find the right supplies.
Best of luck and welcome aboard.
Edit: You do not have to register, but in order to pull dogs from Animal control you will need to have the 501c3 status. Even if you do not register as a rescue with the ASPCA or some other group, you should get the tax exempt status.

Do shitzu dogs get depressed or have seperation anxiety after being seperated from another dog?

Question by queentrina: Do shitzu dogs get depressed or have seperation anxiety after being seperated from another dog?

I dog sat for my friend and she has a shitzu and so do I. We got them from the same litter. They played together all weekend. After my friends dog left my dog has just been laying around and looking depreseed and sad. My friends dog is doing the same thing. Is it possible they are depressed of sad?

Best answer:

Answer by wisdomisbeauty
Absolutely, You took her best friend away. Give her alot of attention, a stuffed animal, and a new toy or something to help her forget about her other half thats missing.

Answer by BrownEyedGirl
I think any dog – Shitzu or not – can get like this. They’re very smart! My mom had two dogs, and when one of them passed away, the other was very lethargic. You could tell he was upset. You should set up another play date! :)

Answer by Dana1985,Masterofignorance
No they are dogs and therefore do not get human conditions. However people who know nothing about dogs and think they are humans will put these feelings in their heads and therefore the dog will act that way simply becasue it reacts to it owner!

Answer by Been there,done that
Nope,just spoiled rotten………..& EXHAUSTED!!!!!
duh;you just said….”played all weekend”

Answer by TK at TMDF
That’s why communities are establishing leash-free dog areas and why people with puppies plan “play dates”. It’s healthy for puppies to romp and play with others. A tired dog = a happy owner. Get out your calendars and find an hour or two a couple times a week or/and check out local dog parks.

Answer by Madonna K
Dogs are social, emotional, pack animals. If your sister or best friend came and stayed all weekend with you, then suddenly disappeared, how would you feel? Pretty bummed out. Dogs are capable of making this distinction, just as we are.

Spend some extra time walking your dog tonight or tomorrow. Exercise with you is a great bonding ritual, and bonding with you will take the place of the dog who left.

Try to arrange more play dates with the other dog, or with other dogs you know and trust. The more play and positive experiences a dog has as a puppy, the better adjusted they are as an adult.

@DaBasset: Now now “well bred” yorkies don’t come in black. There is a POS breeder in my general area who sells partis and chocolate yorkies *gags*

Answer by DaBasset *Will this site EVER work right?*
Yorkies don’t come in black. They are blue and tan. The woman was wrong.

Answer by Kayla
Ya they exist and rpare really rare. Rescue a dog instead.

If you saw a all black Yorkshire Terrier, it was not a purebred dog. It was poorly bred. Any reputable breeder will sell you a dog, but not one that is a solid color because they don’t come that way.
As for the growth they should be under 10 inches at shoulder and weigh between 6-8 pounds when an adult.

very rare – good luck! plus that would be considered a poorly breed yorkie as it does not meet breed standards which means that if probably came from a bad breeder!

Answer by Still Can’t Think of a Name
I don’t think it’s impossible, but if the dog was really a Yorkie, it was a poorly bred BYB dog. Reputable breeders breed for breed distinctions and a solid colored Yorkie would not be qualified for any registry, etc. They want the typical steel blue/tan markings, so even if the dog wasn’t a solid black, it would still be rejected. If you want a “black Yorkie”, check your shelters for some mix or find a reputable Scottish Terrier breeder if you don’t mind a slightly larger dog with a longer snout.

it was probably a yorkie MIX.. not a purebred
