Question by Naya: Are Shitzu dogs ok with staying home alone?
Our family is thinking about getting a Shitzu dog, but we want to make sure we find a breed that will be ok with staying home while my parents go to work and us kids go to school. We all leave by at least 8:00 and the soonest anyone gets home is about 3:00, if I come home right after school. If a shitzu is not a good breed to be left alone, do you know of any other breeds (small dogs, my mom doesn’t want any big or medium sized ones) that will be fine alone until we get home.
Oops wrong spelling…its Shih-Tzu

It’s a small dog so I don’t know. It also depends on the dog. Some dogs are neurotic and don’t like to be left alone.
You should consult with a veterinarian, an animal shelter, and get some books on different breeds. It would seem a bigger dog would be better because they have larger bladders. However, there are so many breeds. I could not recommend one. It depends on your lifestyle and experience. Do your homework before you get a dog please. Visit a shelter. Once you take a dog in, it’s yours for life. So be careful.

A shih tzu would be perfect for your situation. I am a shih tzu owner and my dog stays at home, well in the backyard, by herself alot during the day while everyone goes to work and stuff. She really enjoys staying out, exploring the backyard and etc. Just make sure you give them plenty of fresh water and food while you’re out and maybe some toys for the dog to play with and a doggie house. Good luck!

Maybe your family should consider getting a cat instead. Dogs need attention. Lots of attention. Some dogs you can leave at home alone all day and they’re fine, others get into things and tear up the house. It doesn’t really depend on the breed, it depends on the dog and his/her personality. You can crate train any dog and put him in his crate while you’re gone, but depending on the age and, again, temperament, he may not do well for more than an hour or two in the crate. The longest you should keep a dog in a crate is 8-10 hours. The other problem with crating a dog is that she may not get the exercise she needs. You would have to walk her for a half hour before you leave, and for at least an hour in the evening when you come home.
Dogs need attention, love, and exercise. You cannot get a dog expecting him to fit in with your family’s schedule. A cat or a small animal (mouse, rat, guinea pig) may be a better option.

All dogs can be left home alone, provided they are NOT spoiled. 99% of people work or go to school or have a life and must leave their homes at some time. Put the dog in a crate when you leave the house and he will be fine.
Remember, pick a dog that is clear in the head and do not spoil it so there will be no problems later on. Good luck.

I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the breed, so much as the individual dog. I’ve had all different breeds in my rescue efforts and as personal pets. Some did well at home alone, some did not. If you’re getting a very young dog, you might have a better chance of it not having separation anxiety. If you adopt an adult dog from a rescue, the foster home will be able to tell you if the dog will be okay alone. In fact, if you adopt from a rescue you can tell them up front that you need a dog that will be okay on its own from 8 to3 each day and they will be able to help you select one of their rescues that suits you. Good Luck.

Shih tzus tend to have a hard time when being home alone. Ours used to find papers items and shred them and spread them all across the house. Crate training can help the problem, but I wouldn’t recommend a Shih tzu to a family who doesn’t have at least one person home most of the time.
I recommend going to this site: glowdog.com/bestdog and taking the survey. It will give you a good idea of breeds that would work well for your family.

they got kinda lonely when their family or the housekeeper wasnt around.. Id be over there alone and the dogs seemed pretty depressed… although I think it might have alot to do with how they are raised becuase either the family or the housekeeper was prestent 24/7 for all the dogs lives sooo
ya.. im not an expert
just an observation!

This breed is more closely related to the wolf than any other breeds. Whether a star in the ring or at home, the Shih Tzu is one of the oldest breeds of dog
