We run a small home based dog rescue in KY we are needing to know what type of license we need and how to get it. We are hearing a lot of different answers and opinions. We don’t have our 501 c 3 yet.

I would think that a kennel license would be top priority, so you cannot get in trouble for the amount of dogs you may have on your property at one time.

Call your county humane society or animal shelter.

Contact your local ASPCA or Humane Society chapter. They’ll help you.

Don’t worry about them thinking you’re competition. Organizations that are set up to save dogs will help whoever asks if they can get some people on their team.

If you go to your State GOV. website and look up the small business information you will find everything you need. Also many times State websites have people you can chat with live and get your questions answered.

If you are a rescue, you don’t need a kennel license, you do need a 501C if you expect to be tax exempt and be able to accept tax deductable contributions.

Go file for the 501C or you cannot call yourself a legitimate rescue.

THis is a message to pass on to help people realise how many pets are actually out there.. Why Breed or buy while rescues are left behind?
