Question by queentrina: Do shitzu dogs get depressed or have seperation anxiety after being seperated from another dog?

I dog sat for my friend and she has a shitzu and so do I. We got them from the same litter. They played together all weekend. After my friends dog left my dog has just been laying around and looking depreseed and sad. My friends dog is doing the same thing. Is it possible they are depressed of sad?

Absolutely, You took her best friend away. Give her alot of attention, a stuffed animal, and a new toy or something to help her forget about her other half thats missing.

I think any dog – Shitzu or not – can get like this. They’re very smart! My mom had two dogs, and when one of them passed away, the other was very lethargic. You could tell he was upset. You should set up another play date! :)

No they are dogs and therefore do not get human conditions. However people who know nothing about dogs and think they are humans will put these feelings in their heads and therefore the dog will act that way simply becasue it reacts to it owner!

Nope,just spoiled rotten………..& EXHAUSTED!!!!!
duh;you just said….”played all weekend”

That’s why communities are establishing leash-free dog areas and why people with puppies plan “play dates”. It’s healthy for puppies to romp and play with others. A tired dog = a happy owner. Get out your calendars and find an hour or two a couple times a week or/and check out local dog parks.

Dogs are social, emotional, pack animals. If your sister or best friend came and stayed all weekend with you, then suddenly disappeared, how would you feel? Pretty bummed out. Dogs are capable of making this distinction, just as we are.

Spend some extra time walking your dog tonight or tomorrow. Exercise with you is a great bonding ritual, and bonding with you will take the place of the dog who left.

Try to arrange more play dates with the other dog, or with other dogs you know and trust. The more play and positive experiences a dog has as a puppy, the better adjusted they are as an adult.
